Stay in the Christmas spirit by making eco friendly and zero waste decorations. Whether you're passionate about outdoor Christmas lights, Christmas tree decorations, or Christmas tabletop decor, there is an environmentally friendly option for all. Let’s start at the front door with a beautiful zero waste Christmas wreath! Here are some tips to help you make the most beautiful and sustainable wreath this Christmas season.

Making a Christmas wreath out of pine cones

One of the easiest ways to make an eco-friendly wreath is by making it out of pine cones!

This is what you need:

  • An old metal coat hanger

  • Pine cones

  • Ribbons & twines [optional!]

1. Collect enough pine cones

Still got some pine cones the children found during an autumn hike, they’ll be great on your wreath. Another option is to buy a little net with cones in your local garden centre.

2. Bend your metal coat hanger

Take your wire coat hanger and shape it into a circle as well as you can. It doesn’t matter   if it’s not a perfect circle. Bend the hook down into a loop and twist it into a stem at the top for hanging.

3. Start to decorate

Use twines, ribbons or plain strings to tie the pine cones to the metal circle. If you have some twine to hand, then wrap it around this stem for a bit of extra grip and a softer look. This will help make it more sturdy if you're hanging it on your front door.

Making a Classic green Christmas wreath

A true classic which will give your guests a truly classic Christmas welcome is a Green [and red!] Christmas wreath.

This is what you need:

  • An old metal coat hanger

  • Foliage

  • Twine [optional]

  • Dried citrus slices [lemon or orange]

  • Ribbon

  1. Dress up warm, bring a gluhwein and go out to look for some evergreen foliage. As an alternative you could also send the children out to go and find you some. Try to gather up a variety of different branches, greenery and berries if they’re available. Malleable pieces will be the easiest to bend and weave into your wreath.

  2. Take your wire, metal coat hanger and make it into a circle as well as you can. It doesn’t matter if it’s not perfectly round. Bend the hook down into a loop and twist it into a stem at the top for hanging.

  3. If you have some twine to hand, then wrap it around the stem for some extra grip and a better look. This will help make it more sturdy when you're hanging it on your front door.

  4. Take the biggest pieces of foliage first. Wrap them around your metal circle and secure them with twine.

  5. Just continue to build up your wreath this way. It will become easier to poke in bits of green and foliage as it grows fuller and bigger.

If you want to give it a little something extra then you could make some dried orange slices. Pierce a slice, thread it onto some twine or ribbon and tie it to your wreath as a finishing touch.

Cookie cutter wreath

This one is an all time favorite with the children. The beauty of it is, once Christmas is over, you can dismantle it and use all the parts again.

This is what you need:

  • A set of cookie cutters. It’s best to have at least 20 made up of different shapes and sizes.

  • Twine, string or ribbon.

1. To assemble your wreath, lay your cookie cutters out on the table. Arrange them into a circle and try to get the corners and curves as closely together and interlocked as possible.

2. Take small pieces of twine, string or ribbon and tie your cookie cutters together.

3. Go crazy with the garnishes- add in some dried berries, ribbons, foliage, citrus slices, pine cones or anything else you have at hand!

There you have it, a very original Christmas wreath, make sure all your cookie baking is done before making this wreath!
